The third call to prayer was instituted by Uthman when the population of Medina grew large. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had only one muezzin, and the call to prayer on Friday used to be made when the imam sat down.
أخبرنا محمد بن يحيى بن عبد الله قال حدثنا يعقوب قال حدثنا أبي عن صالح عن ابن شهاب أن
إنما أمر بالتأذين الثالث عثمان حين كثر أهل المدينة ولم يكن لرسول الله ﷺ غير مؤذن واحد وكان التأذين يوم الجمعة حين يجلس الإمام
