Urwa reported that he asked Ayesha about the words of Allah, "And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those women who are lawful and pleasing to you, two, three, or four" [Nisa 4:3].She said, "Son of my sister, this refers to the orphan girl who is under the care of her guardian and shares in his property. Her wealth and her beauty appeal to him, so her guardian wishes to marry her without dealing fairly regarding her dower, meaning that he does not give her what someone else would give her. So they were forbidden to marry such girls unless they dealt justly with them and gave them the highest dower customary for their like, and they were commanded to marry other women who were lawful and pleasing to them instead."Urwa continued, Ayesha said, "Then, after this verse, people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for a ruling concerning these girls, and Allah revealed, 'And they ask you for a ruling concerning women. Say, Allah gives you a ruling concerning them, and so does what is recited to you in the Book about orphan girls to whom you do not give what has been prescribed for them, while you desire to marry them' [Nisa 4:127]."She said, "What Allah Almighty mentioned as being recited to you in the Book is the earlier verse in which He said, 'And if you fear that you will not deal justly with the orphan girls, then marry those women who are lawful and pleasing to you' [Nisa 4:3]."Ayesha added, "As for the words of Allah in the other verse, 'while you desire to marry them' [Nisa 4:127], this refers to a man's disinclination toward the orphan girl in his care when she has little wealth and little beauty. So they were forbidden to marry those orphan girls whose wealth and beauty they desired except with fairness, precisely because of their disinclination toward the others."This is like the hadith of Yunus from Zuhri, and he added at the end, "because of their disinclination toward them when they had little wealth and little beauty."
