Zuhri reported,

Humayd bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf reported that he heard Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, during the year he performed the pilgrimage, speaking from the pulpit. Muawiya took hold of a lock of hair that was in the hand of one of his guards and said, "People of Madinah, where are your scholars? I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbid things like this, and he said, 'Banu Israil were destroyed only when their women took to using this.'"In Muamar's version of the report, the wording is, "Banu Israil were punished."

حدثنا ابن أبي عمر حدثنا سفيان بن عيينة ح و حدثني حرملة بن يحيى أخبرنا ابن وهب أخبرني يونس ح و حدثنا عبد بن حميد أخبرنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر كلهم عن الزهري بمثل حديث مالك غير أن في حديث معمر إنما عذب بنو إسرائيل
