The Prophet of Allah ﷺ had people flogged for drinking wine with palm branches and sandals, and later Abu Bakr flogged forty lashes. When Umar came to power and people had moved close to the fertile countryside and the villages, he asked, "What do you think about the flogging for wine?"Abdul-Rahman bin Awf replied, "I think you should make it like the lightest of the prescribed punishments."So Umar had people flogged eighty lashes.
