Ata reported,

When the House was burned during the time of Yazid bin Muawiya, when the people of Sham invaded it and the events took their course, Ibn Zubayr left it as it was until people came for the pilgrimage season, intending to embolden them or incite them against the people of Sham. When the people had assembled, he said, "People, advise me about the Kaabah. Shall I demolish it and rebuild it from its foundation, or shall I just repair what has been damaged?"Ibn Abbas said, "I have formed an opinion regarding it. I think you should repair what has been damaged and leave the House on which the people accepted Islam and the stones on which the people accepted Islam and upon which the Prophet ﷺ was sent."Ibn Zubayr said, "If one of your houses had burned, none of you would be content until he rebuilt it, so what about the House of your Lord? I will seek guidance from my Lord for three days, then I will resolve upon my course."When the three days had passed, his view settled on demolishing it. The people held back, fearing that whoever first ascended it might be struck by something from the sky, until one man went up and threw down some stones from it. When the people saw that nothing happened to him, they followed in succession and demolished it down to the ground.Ibn Zubayr then set up pillars and draped curtains over them until the building rose. Ibn Zubayr said, "I heard Ayesha say that the Prophet ﷺ said, 'Were it not that the people have only recently left disbelief, and that I do not have the funds sufficient for its construction, I would have included within it five cubits from the Hijr, and I would have made for it a door through which people could enter and a door through which they could exit.' Today I have what I can spend, and I do not fear the people."So he added to it five cubits from the Hijr until he uncovered a foundation that the people looked upon, and he built upon it. The Kaabah's height had been eighteen cubits, but when he expanded it, it appeared too short, so he added ten cubits to its height. He made for it two doors, one through which to enter and the other through which to exit. When Ibn Zubayr was killed, Hajjaj wrote to Abdul-Malik bin Marwan informing him of this and informing him that Ibn Zubayr had laid the building on a foundation that the trustworthy men of Mecca had seen.Abdul-Malik wrote back to him, "We want nothing to do with Ibn Zubayr's tampering. As for what he added to its height, leave it. But as for what he added from the Hijr, return it to its original construction, and seal the door he opened."So he demolished it and restored it to its original construction.
