Abdullah bin Ubayd reported that Harith bin Abdullah came as a delegate to Abdul-Malik bin Marwan during his caliphate. Abdul-Malik said, "I do not think Abu Khubayb," meaning Ibn Zubayr, "ever heard from Ayesha what he used to claim he heard from her."Harith said, "He did indeed. I myself heard it from her."Abdul-Malik asked, "And what did you hear her say?"Harith replied, She said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Your people fell short in their building of the House. Were it not that they have only recently left shirk behind, I would restore what they left out of it. So if it occurs to your people after me to rebuild it, come, let me show you what they left out." And he showed her close to seven cubits.This is the wording of Abdullah bin Ubayd's report. Walid bin Ata added to it that the Prophet ﷺ said, "And I would have made two doors for it set level with the ground, one on the east and one on the west. Do you know why your people raised its door up high?"Ayesha said, I answered, "No."He said, "Out of pride, so that no one could enter it except whomever they chose. When a man wanted to enter, they would let him start climbing, and then just as he was about to get in, they would shove him and he would fall."Abdul-Malik said to Harith, "You yourself heard her say this?"He said, "Yes."At that Abdul-Malik poked at the ground with his staff for a while, then said, "I wish I had left it alone, along with whatever that entailed."
حدثني محمد بن حاتم حدثنا محمد بن بكر أخبرنا ابن جريج قال سمعت عبد الله بن عبيد بن عمير والوليد بن عطاء يحدثان
عبد الله بن عبيد وفد الحارث بن عبد الله على عبد الملك بن مروان في خلافته فقال عبد الملك ما أظن أبا خبيب يعني ابن الزبير سمع من عائشة ما كان يزعم أنه سمعه منها قال الحارث بلى أنا سمعته منها قال سمعتها تقول ماذا قال قالت قال رسول الله ﷺ إن قومك استقصروا من بنيان البيت ولولا حداثة عهدهم بالشرك أعدت ما تركوا منه فإن بدا لقومك من بعدي أن يبنوه فهلمي لأريك ما تركوا منه فأراها قريبا من سبعة أذرع هذا حديث عبد الله بن عبيد وزاد عليه الوليد بن عطاء قال النبي ﷺ ولجعلت لها بابين موضوعين في الأرض شرقيا وغربيا وهل تدرين لم كان قومك رفعوا بابها قالت قلت لا قال تعززا أن لا يدخلها إلا من أرادوا فكان الرجل إذا هو أراد أن يدخلها يدعونه يرتقي حتى إذا كاد أن يدخل دفعوه فسقط قال عبد الملك للحارث أنت سمعتها تقول هذا قال نعم قال فنكت ساعة بعصاه ثم قال وددت أني تركته وما تحمل
