Ata bin Yasar reported,

Kaab al-Ahbar came from Syria with a group of travelers, and somewhere along the way they came upon the meat of game. Kaab gave them a ruling that they could eat it. When they reached Umar bin Khattab in Madinah, they mentioned this to him.Umar asked, "Who gave you that ruling?"They answered, "Kaab."Umar said, "Then I appoint him as your leader until you return."Later, when they were somewhere on the road to Makkah, a swarm of locusts passed by them, and Kaab gave them a ruling that they could catch them and eat them. When they came to Umar bin Khattab, they mentioned this to him as well.Umar asked, "What led you to give them such a ruling?"Kaab replied, "It is among the game of the sea."Umar asked, "And how do you know that?"Kaab said, "Commander of the Faithful, by Him in whose hand my soul rests, they are nothing but the sneeze of a whale, which it sneezes out twice every year."

أن كعب الأحبار أقبل من الشام في ركب حتى إذا كانوا ببعض الطريق وجدوا لحم صيد فأفتاهم كعب بأكله قال فلما قدموا على عمر بن الخطاب بالمدينة ذكروا ذلك له فقال من أفتاكم بهذا قالوا كعب قال فإني قد أمرته عليكم حتى ترجعوا ثم لما كانوا ببعض طريق مكة مرت بهم رجل من جراد فأفتاهم كعب أن يأخذوه فيأكلوه فلما قدموا على عمر بن الخطاب ذكروا له ذلك فقال ما حملك على أن تفتيهم بهذا قال هو من صيد البحر قال وما يدريك قال يا أمير المؤمنين والذي نفسي بيده إن هي إلا نثرة حوت ينثره في كل عام مرتين
