A man from Yemen whose hand and foot had been amputated came and stayed as a guest of Abu Bakr Siddiq, complaining to him that the governor of Yemen had wronged him. He used to spend the night in prayer, and Abu Bakr would say, "By your father, your night is not the night of a thief."Then they discovered that a necklace belonging to Asma bint Umays, the wife of Abu Bakr Siddiq, was missing. The man went about searching with them, saying, "Allah, deal with whoever plotted by night against the people of this righteous household."They found the jewelry in the possession of a goldsmith, who claimed that the man with the amputated limbs had brought it to him. The man then confessed to it, or else witnesses testified against him, so Abu Bakr Siddiq gave the order and his left hand was cut off.Abu Bakr said, "By Allah, his prayer against himself weighs more heavily with me against him than his theft."
حدثني يحيى عن مالك
أن رجلا من أهل اليمن أقطع اليد والرجل قدم فنزل على أبي بكر الصديق فشكا إليه أن عامل اليمن قد ظلمه فكان يصل من الليل فيقول أبو بكر وأبيك ما ليلك بليل سارق ثم إنهم فقدوا عقدا لأسماء بنت عميس امرأة أبي بكر الصديق فجعل الرجل يطوف معهم ويقول اللهم عليك بمن بيت أهل هذا البيت الصالح فوجدوا الحلي عند صائغ زعم أن الأقطع جاءه به فاعترف به الأقطع أو شهد عليه به فأمر به أبو بكر الصديق فقطعت يده اليسرى وقال أبو بكر والله لدعاؤه على نفسه أشد عندي عليه من سرقته
