Zubayr bin Awwam came upon a man who had caught a thief and was intending to take him to the authorities. Zubayr interceded on the thief's behalf, asking the man to let him go.The man said, "No, not until I bring him before the authorities."Zubayr replied, "Once you have brought him before the authorities, then may Allah curse the one who intercedes and the one who accepts the intercession."

أن الزبير بن العوام لقي رجلا قد أخذ سارقا وهو يريد أن يذهب به إلى السلطان فشفع له الزبير ليرسله فقال لا حتى أبلغ به السلطان فقال الزبير إذا بلغت به السلطان فلعن الله الشافع والمشفع
