Malik reported,

Malik reported that he heard Rabia bin Abu Abdul-Rahman and others mention that a slave under a deferred-freedom contract belonged to Farafisa bin Umayr Hanafi, and that the slave offered to pay him the entire amount still owed under his contract, but Farafisa refused.So the slave went to Marwan bin Hakam, who was then the governor of Madinah, and told him about it. Marwan summoned Farafisa and put the matter to him, but he still refused. Marwan then ordered that the money be taken from the slave and placed in the public treasury.He said to the slave, "Go, you are now free."When Farafisa saw this, he took the money.

أنه سمع ربيعة بن أبي عبد الرحمن وغيره يذكرون أن مكاتبا كان للفرافصة بن عمير الحنفي وأنه عرض عليه أن يدفع إليه جميع ما عليه من كتابته فأبى الفرافصة فأتى المكاتب مروان بن الحكم وهو أمير المدينة فذكر ذلك له فدعا مروان الفرافصة فقال له ذلك فأبى فأمر مروان بذلك المال أن يقبض من المكاتب فيوضع في بيت المال وقال للمكاتب اذهب فقد عتقت فلما رأى ذلك الفرافصة قبض المال
