His father informed him that he was sitting with Abban bin Uthman when a group from Juhaynah and a group from Banu Harith bin Khazraj brought a dispute before him. A woman of Juhaynah had been married to a man of Banu Harith bin Khazraj named Ibrahim bin Kulayb. The woman died, leaving behind property and freed slaves, and her son and her husband inherited from her. Then her son died.His heirs said, "The right of patronage over the freed slaves belongs to us, since her son had already secured it."The Juhaynah people said, "That is not so. They are the freed slaves of our kinswoman, so when her child died the patronage over them belongs to us, and we are the ones who inherit from them."So Abban bin Uthman ruled in favor of the Juhaynah people regarding the patronage over the freed slaves.

أنه أخبره أبوه أنه كان جالسا عند أبان بن عثمان فاختصم إليه نفر من جهينة ونفر من بني الحارث بن الخزرج وكانت امرأة من جهينة عند رجل من بني الحارث بن الخزرج يقال له إبراهيم بن كليب فماتت المرأة وتركت مالا وموالي فورثها ابنها وزوجها ثم مات ابنها فقال ورثته لنا ولاء الموالي قد كان ابنها أحرزه فقال الجهنيون ليس كذلك إنما هم موالي صاحبتنا فإذا مات ولدها فلنا ولاؤهم ونحن نرثهم فقضى أبان بن عثمان للجهنيين بولاء الموالي
