Umar bin Khattah used to assign children born in the days of ignorance to whoever claimed them after Islam. Two men came to him, each claiming the child of a certain woman. So Umar bin Khattab summoned a tracker, who examined the two of them and said, "They both have a share in him."Umar bin Khattab struck him with the whip. Then he called for the woman and said, "Tell me your account."She said, "This one," meaning one of the two men, "used to come to me while I was out among my family's camels, and he would not leave me until he supposed, and I supposed, that a pregnancy had taken hold in me. Then he went away from me, and afterward blood flowed from me. Then this other one married me, and I do not know which of the two he is from."At that the tracker exclaimed, "Allah is greater!"So Umar said to the boy, "Take whichever of them you wish as your father."
و حدثني مالك عن يحيى بن سعيد
أن عمر بن الخطاب كان يليط أولاد الجاهلية بمن ادعاهم في الإسلام فأتى رجلان كلاهما يدعي ولد امرأة فدعا عمر بن الخطاب قائفا فنظر إليهما فقال القائف لقد اشتركا فيه فضربه عمر بن الخطاب بالدرة ثم دعا المرأة فقال أخبريني خبرك فقالت كان هذا لأحد الرجلين يأتيني وهي في إبل لأهلها فلا يفارقها حتى يظن وتظن أنه قد استمر بها حبل ثم انصرف عنها فأهريقت عليه دماء ثم خلف عليها هذا تعني الآخر فلا أدري من أيهما هو قال فكبر القائف فقال عمر للغلام وال أيهما شئت
