Ahwas died in Syria at the time when his wife had entered the bleeding of the third menstrual period, and he had already divorced her. So Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan wrote to Zayd bin Thabit asking him about this, and Zayd bin Thabit wrote back to him, "Once she has entered the bleeding of the third menstrual period, she is free of him and he is free of her. She does not inherit from him, nor does he inherit from her."
و حدثني عن مالك عن نافع وزيد بن أسلم
أن الأحوص هلك بالشام حين دخلت امرأته في الدم من الحيضة الثالثة وقد كان طلقها فكتب معاوية بن أبي سفيان إلى زيد بن ثابت يسأله عن ذلك فكتب إليه زيد بن ثابت إنها إذا دخلت في الدم من الحيضة الثالثة فقد برئت منه وبرئ منها ولا ترثه ولا يرثها
