One of us, when she was menstruating, would be instructed by the Prophet ﷺ to wrap herself in a waist-cloth, and then he would have direct contact with her.

كانت إحدانا إذا حاضت أمرها النبي ﷺ أن تأتزر بإزار ثم يباشرها
