The Prophet ﷺ said, "The Fire was kindled for a thousand years until it became white, then it was kindled for another thousand years until it became red, then it was kindled for another thousand years until it became black. So it is black like the darkest night."

Takhrij, its chain is daif. Tirmidhi narrated it in the Description of Hell, in the chapter on the description of the fire being black and dark, hadith no. 2591, from Abbas with this wording. See also hadith no. 2557 regarding its defect.Abu Hurairah said, "Do you think it is red like this fire of yours? It is blacker than tar," tar meaning pitch. This was narrated by Malik, 2/994, and its chain is sahih. Baji said, "Its ruling is that of a marfu report."
