The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Fire complained to its Lord, saying, 'My Lord, parts of me are consuming other parts.' So He granted it two breaths, one in winter and one in summer. The intense cold you experience comes from its frigid blast, and the intense heat you experience comes from its scorching wind."
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة حدثنا عبد الله بن إدريس عن الأعمش عن أبي صالح
قال رسول الله ﷺ اشتكت النار إلى ربها فقالت يا رب أكل بعضي بعضا فجعل لها نفسين نفس في الشتاء ونفس في الصيف فشدة ما تجدون من البرد من زمهريرها وشدة ما تجدون من الحر من سمومها
[Sahih] Tirmidhi related it in the chapter on the description of Hell, section "That the Fire has two breaths... etc.", hadith no. 2592, from the hadith of Amash, with this wording, and he said, hasan sahih. Asim bin Bahdala also related it from Abu Salih with this wording, found in Darimi 2/340, no. 2849, and it has many corroborating narrations in Bukhari, Muslim, and others.
