A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, guide me to a deed which, if I do it, will cause Allah to love me and people to love me."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "Renounce the world, and Allah will love you. Renounce what is in people's hands, and they will love you."

Takhrij, daif. Aqeeli narrated it in 2/11 from the hadith of Khalid Qurashi through this route, and said, "It has no basis from the hadith of Thawri." Muhammad bin Kathir Sanani followed him in narrating it, but perhaps he took it from him and concealed the source through tadlis, since this Khalid is the one well known for transmitting it. Hakim graded it sahih in 4/313, but Dhahabi rejected this, saying, "I say, Khalid is a fabricator." Busiri graded it daif.Abdullah bin Waqid, Abu Qatadah Harrani, also narrated it from Thawri through this route, and he is discarded (matruk) and a concealer of sources (mudallis). See Taqrib and other works. The hadith has daif supporting narrations (shawahid).
