A man from his people reported, I stayed with Abu Hashim bin Utbah while he was suffering from a stab wound. Muawiya came to visit him, and Abu Hashim wept.Muawiya asked, "What makes you weep, uncle? Is it pain that distresses you, or is it grief for the world, since its purity has departed?"Abu Hashim replied, "It is neither. Rather, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me with a charge, and I wish I had followed it. He said, 'Perhaps you will live to see wealth distributed among peoples, and all that will suffice you of that is a servant and a mount in the path of Allah.' But I lived to see it, and I accumulated."
حدثنا محمد بن الصباح أنبأنا جرير عن منصور عن أبي وائل
رجل من قومه قال نزلت على أبي هاشم بن عتبة وهو طعين فأتاه معاوية يعوده فبكى أبو هاشم فقال معاوية ما يبكيك أي خال أوجع يشئزك أم على الدنيا فقد ذهب صفوها قال على كل لا ولكن رسول الله ﷺ عهد إلي عهدا وددت أني كنت تبعته قال إنك لعلك تدرك أموالا تقسم بين أقوام وإنما يكفيك من ذلك خادم ومركب في سبيل الله فأدركت فجمعت
[Hasan] Reported by Nasai, Adornment, Chapter on Taking a Servant and a Mount, no. 5387, from the hadith of Jareer, and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih in Al-Ihsan, no. 667. Samura bin Sahm is unknown, as stated in Taqrib, but it has a corroborating narration mentioned by Tirmidhi, no. 2327, and reported by Nasai in Kubra, no. 9812, and Ahmad, 5/36, and others, with a hasan chain.
