The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us two narrations. I have witnessed the first, and I am waiting for the other. He told us that trustworthiness was sent down into the roots of men's hearts. Tanafusi said this means the depths of men's hearts. Then the Quran was revealed, so the people learned from the Quran and learned from the Sunnah. Then he told us about how trustworthiness would be taken away. He said, "A man will sleep, and trustworthiness will be removed from his heart, leaving behind a trace like a faint mark. Then he will sleep again, and the rest of the trustworthiness will be removed, leaving behind a trace like a blister, as when you roll a hot ember onto your foot and it raises a swelling. You see it bulging, but there is nothing inside it."Then Hudhayfah took a handful of pebbles and rolled them down his shin. He continued, "People will conduct their business with one another, but hardly anyone will fulfill his trust, until it will be said, 'Among such-and-such tribe there is a trustworthy man.' And it will be said of a man, 'How sensible he is, how resolute, how refined,' though there is not even a mustard seed of faith in his heart. There came a time when I did not care which of you I dealt with. If he was a Muslim, his Islam would compel him to be honest with me, and if he was a Jew or a Christian, his overseer would ensure he dealt fairly with me. But today, I would not transact with anyone except so-and-so and so-and-so."
