The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you, fathom by fathom, cubit by cubit, hand-span by hand-span, to the point that even if they entered the hole of a lizard, you would follow them in."The companions asked, "Messenger of Allah, do you mean the Jews and the Christians?"He replied, "Who else?"

قال رسول الله ﷺ لتتبعن سنة من كان قبلكم باعا بباع وذراعا بذراع وشبرا بشبر حتى لو دخلوا في جحر ضب لدخلتم فيه قالوا يا رسول الله اليهود والنصارى قال فمن إذا
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Ahmad narrated it, 2/450, from Yazid, with this wording, and Busiri graded it sahih, as did Hakim, 1/37, saying it meets the standard of Muslim, and Dhahabi agreed with him. The hadith has other routes of transmission found in Bukhari, Muslim, and others.
