The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The Children of Israil split into seventy-one sects, and my nation will split into seventy-two sects. All of them will be in the Fire except one, and that is the main body of the community."
حدثنا هشام بن عمار حدثنا الوليد بن مسلم حدثنا أبو عمرو حدثنا قتادة
قال رسول الله ﷺ إن بني إسرائيل افترقت على إحدى وسبعين فرقة وإن أمتي ستفترق على ثنتين وسبعين فرقة كلها في النار إلا واحدة وهي الجماعة
[Sahih] Khatib narrated it in Sharaf Ashab al-Hadith, p. 24, no. 41, from the hadith of Walid from Abu Amr Uzai, through him, and Busiri graded it sahih. Qatada used ambiguous transmission wording (anana), but he was corroborated by Saeed bin Abu Hilal and Zayd bin Aslam and others, as I mentioned in the sourcing of al-Nihaya, no. 48.
