The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him on the night of the jinn, "Do you have anything for purification?"He replied, "No, only some nabidh in a water-skin."The Prophet ﷺ said, "A wholesome date and pure water," and then he performed ablution with it.This is the wording of Waki's hadith.
Its chain of transmission is daif. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Purification, chapter on performing wudu with nabidh, hadith no. 84, from the hadith of Abu Fazarah, with this chain. Tirmidhi said, in hadith no. 88, that Abu Zayd is a man unknown among the scholars of hadith. Ibn Hibban, Tahawi, and others declared the hadith daif. Sayyid Jamal even said that the scholars of hadith are unanimous that this hadith is daif.
