There was an old woman who used to visit us and recite charms against erysipelas. We had a bed with tall legs, and whenever Abdullah came in, he would clear his throat and make some sound to announce himself. One day he came in, and when I heard his voice, I concealed the woman from him. He came and sat beside me, then touched me and felt a string. He asked, "What is this?"I replied, "It is a charm tied for me against erysipelas."He pulled it off, broke it, and threw it away, saying, "The family of Abdullah has no need for shirk. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Charms, amulets, and love-spells are all shirk.'"I said, "I went out one day, and so-and-so caught sight of me, and the eye on his side began to water. Whenever I recite the charm over it, the tears stop, and whenever I leave it, it waters again."He said, "That is Satan. When you obey him, he leaves you alone, and when you disobey him, he jabs his finger into your eye. But if you did as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did, it would be better for you and more likely to heal you. Sprinkle water in your eye and say, 'Remove the harm, Lord of mankind. Heal, for You are the Healer. There is no cure except Your cure, a cure that leaves no illness behind.'"
[Its chain is daif] Abu Dawud recorded it in the Book of Medicine, chapter "Regarding hanging amulets," Hadith 3883, from the hadith of Amash. Amash used ambiguous transmission wording (anana), as noted earlier at Hadith 178, and it contains another flaw. It has a corroborating narration in Hakim, 4/417, 418, but its chain is also daif.
