In his narration, he was the one in charge of the Prophet's ﷺ sacrificial camels. He said, I asked, "Messenger of Allah, what should I do with any of the sacrificial camels that becomes injured along the way?"He replied, "Slaughter it, dip its sandal in its blood, strike its flank with it, then leave it for the people so they may eat from it."
Its chain of transmission is sahih. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapters on rites of pilgrimage, in the chapter on the sacrificial animal if it is disabled before reaching its place, Hadith 1762, from the hadith of Hisham, with this wording. Tirmidhi said, Hadith 910, hasan sahih. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, Hadith 2577, as did Ibn Hibban, Hadith 976, and Hakim, on the criterion of the two Shaikhs, 1/447, and Dhahabi agreed with him.
