We came to visit Jabir bin Abdullah. When we reached him, he asked about each person in the group until he came to me. I said, "I am Muhammad bin Ali bin Husayn." He reached out his hand toward my head and unfastened my upper button, then unfastened my lower button, and placed his palm on my chest. I was a young lad at the time. He said, "Welcome, ask whatever you wish."So I questioned him, and he was blind. The time for prayer came, and he stood up wrapped in a woven garment. Whenever he placed it on his shoulders, its two ends would slip back because it was so small. His cloak was beside him on the clothes-rack. He led us in prayer.I said, "Tell us about the pilgrimage of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."He gestured with his hand and folded down nine fingers, saying, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ remained for nine years without performing Hajj. Then in the tenth year, it was announced among the people that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was going to perform Hajj. A great many people came to Medina, all seeking to follow the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and do as he did. He set out, and we set out with him, until we came to Dhul-Hulayfa.There Asma bint Umays gave birth to Muhammad bin Abu Bakr. She sent word to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asking, 'What should I do?'He said, 'Bathe, secure a cloth between your legs, and enter into ihram.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in the mosque, then mounted Qaswa. When his she-camel rose with him onto the open plain of Bayda, I looked out as far as my sight could reach in front of him, and there were riders and walkers, and the same on his right, and the same on his left, and the same behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in our midst, and the Quran was being revealed to him, and he knew its interpretation. Whatever he did, we did.He pronounced the talbiyah affirming Allah's oneness, 'Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Truly all praise and blessings belong to You, and the dominion. You have no partner.' The people pronounced their talbiyah which they used to say, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not reject any of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ kept to his own talbiyah."Jabir said, "We intended only Hajj. We were not familiar with Umrah. When we reached the House with him, he touched the corner, then walked rapidly for three rounds and walked normally for four. Then he went to the station of Ibrahim and recited, 'And take from the station of Ibrahim a place of prayer' [Baqarah 2:125]. He placed the station between himself and the House."My father used to say, and I do not know him to have mentioned it except from the Prophet ﷺ, that he used to recite in the two rakahs Say, O disbelievers and Say, He is Allah, the One."Then he returned to the House and touched the corner. Then he went out through the gate toward Safa. When he drew near to Safa, he recited, 'Indeed, Safa and Marwa are among the symbols of Allah' [Baqarah 2:158], 'We begin with what Allah began with.' So he began with Safa, climbing it until he could see the House. He magnified Allah, declared His oneness, and praised Him, saying, 'There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things. There is no god but Allah alone. He fulfilled His promise, granted victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.' He made supplication between these statements, and said this three times. Then he descended to Marwa. When his feet reached level ground, he walked, and when they entered the bottom of the valley, he ran. When his feet ascended, he walked again, until he came to Marwa. He did at Marwa as he had done at Safa. When he reached his final round at Marwa, he said, 'If I had known earlier what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals, and I would have made it an Umrah. So whoever among you has not brought a sacrificial animal, let him leave the state of ihram and make it an Umrah.'So all the people came out of ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had brought sacrificial animals.Suraqa bin Malik bin Jushum stood up and asked, 'Messenger of Allah, is this for this year of ours only, or for all time?'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ interlaced his fingers and said, 'Umrah has entered into Hajj like this,' twice, 'no, rather for all time.'Ali arrived with the sacrificial animals of the Prophet ﷺ and found that Fatimah was among those who had come out of ihram. She had put on dyed clothes and applied kohl. Ali objected to this, but she said, 'My father instructed me to do this.'"Ali used to say in Iraq, "I went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ complaining about Fatimah for what she had done, asking the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about what I had heard from her, and informing him that I had objected to it.He said, 'She spoke the truth, she spoke the truth. What did you say when you committed yourself to Hajj?'I said, 'O Allah, I commit myself to ihram for the same as that which Your Messenger ﷺ has committed himself to.'He said, 'I have the sacrificial animals with me, so do not come out of ihram.'"The total number of sacrificial animals brought by Ali from Yemen and those brought by the Prophet ﷺ from Medina was one hundred. All the people came out of ihram and shortened their hair, except the Prophet ﷺ and those who had brought sacrificial animals. When the Day of Tarwiya came and they set out for Mina, they entered into ihram for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted his camel and prayed at Mina the Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha, and Fajr prayers. Then he waited a little until the sun rose, and ordered a tent of hair to be pitched for him at Namira. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then traveled, and Quraysh did not doubt that he would halt at the Sacred Monument or at Muzdalifa as Quraysh used to do in the days of ignorance. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed on until he came to Arafa, and found the tent had been pitched for him at Namira. He dismounted there. When the sun began to decline, he ordered Qaswa to be saddled for him. He mounted and rode until he reached the bottom of the valley. He addressed the people, saying, "Your blood and your wealth are sacred to you, as sacred as this day of yours, in this month of yours, in this land of yours. Behold, everything from the affairs of the days of ignorance is placed beneath these two feet of mine. The bloodshed of the days of ignorance is abolished, and the first blood I abolish is the blood of Rabia bin Harith, who was nursed among the tribe of Saad and was killed by Huzayl. The usury of the days of ignorance is abolished, and the first usury I abolish is our own, the usury of Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib, all of it is abolished.Fear Allah concerning women, for you have taken them as a trust from Allah, and you have made their private parts lawful with the word of Allah. You have the right over them that they should not allow anyone you dislike to sit on your bedding. If they do that, then strike them with a strike that is not severe. And they have the right over you to be provided with food and clothing in a fitting manner.I have left among you that which, if you hold fast to it, you will never go astray, the Book of Allah. You will be asked about me, so what will you say?"They said, "We bear witness that you have conveyed the message, fulfilled your duty, and given sincere counsel."He raised his index finger toward the sky and pointed it at the people, saying, "O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness. O Allah, bear witness," three times. Then Bilal called the adhan, then the iqama, and he prayed Zuhr. Then Bilal called the iqama and he prayed Asr, with no prayer in between. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted and came to the standing-place. He turned his camel's belly toward the rocks, kept the rope of pedestrians in front of him, and faced the qibla. He remained standing until the sun set and the yellowness had somewhat gone, and the disc had disappeared. He took Usama bin Zayd up behind him, then set off. He had pulled Qaswa's reins so tight that her head was touching the front of his saddle. He gestured with his right hand, saying, "O people, calmly, calmly." Whenever he came to a hill, he would loosen the reins a little so she could ascend. Then he came to Muzdalifa, where he prayed Maghrib and Isha with one adhan and two iqamas, with no prayer between them. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ lay down until dawn broke. When the morning became clear to him, he prayed Fajr with one adhan and one iqama. Then he mounted Qaswa and came to the Sacred Monument. He climbed it, praised Allah, magnified Him, and declared His oneness. He kept standing until it became very bright, then set off before sunrise. He took Fadl bin Abbas up behind him, who was a man with beautiful hair, fair-skinned and handsome. As the Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode on, women in litters passed by. Fadl began to look at them, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ placed his hand on the other side of Fadl's face, and Fadl turned his face to the other side to keep looking. When he came to Muhassir, he urged his camel a little. Then he took the middle road that brings you out at the great Jamra, until he came to the Jamra near the tree. He threw seven pebbles at it, saying takbir with each pebble, pebbles like the small stones used in slingshots. He threw from the bottom of the valley. Then he went to the place of sacrifice and slaughtered sixty-three camels with his own hand. He gave Ali the rest, and Ali slaughtered what remained, and he made him a partner in his sacrifice. Then he ordered that a piece be taken from each camel and put into a pot, which was cooked. They both ate from the meat and drank from the broth. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ hastened to the House and prayed Zuhr at Mecca. He came to the clan of Abdul-Muttalib who were drawing water at Zamzam, and said, "Draw, sons of Abdul-Muttalib. Were it not that the people would overwhelm you in your duty of providing water, I would have drawn with you." So they handed him a bucket and he drank from it.
