The Prophet ﷺ proceeded calmly during the Farewell Pilgrimage, instructing the people to maintain tranquility. He commanded them to throw pebbles the size of small stones used for flicking, and he quickened his pace through the valley of Muhassir. He said, "Let my community learn its rites of pilgrimage from me, for I do not know, perhaps I will not meet them again after this year of mine."
حدثنا محمد بن الصباح حدثنا عبد الله بن رجاء المكي عن الثوري قال قال أبو الزبير
أفاض النبي ﷺ في حجة الوداع وعليه السكينة وأمرهم بالسكينة وأمرهم أن يرموا بمثل حصى الخذف وأوضع في وادي محسر وقال لتأخذ أمتي نسكها فإني لا أدري لعلي لا ألقاهم بعد عامي هذا
[Sahih]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Rites of Hajj, chapter on hastening from Jam, no. 1944, from the hadith of Thawri, with this same wording. Muslim also narrated it, no. 1299, from the hadith of Abu Zubayr, who heard Jabir bin Abdullah narrate it, in a very abridged form.
