He performed Hajj during the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he only caught up with the people when they had already reached Jam (Muzdalifah). He said, "I came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, 'Messenger of Allah, I have exhausted my mount and worn myself out. By Allah, I did not pass by a single hill without stopping at it. Is my Hajj valid?'"The Prophet ﷺ replied, "Whoever attends this prayer with us and stood at Arafat earlier, by night or by day, has completed his rites and his Hajj is complete."
حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي شيبة وعلي بن محمد قالا حدثنا وكيع حدثنا إسمعيل بن أبي خالد عن عامر يعني الشعبي
أنه حج على عهد رسول الله ﷺ فلم يدرك الناس إلا وهم بجمع قال فأتيت النبي ﷺ فقلت يا رسول الله إني أنضيت راحلتي وأتعبت نفسي والله إن تركت من حبل إلا وقفت عليه فهل لي من حج فقال النبي ﷺ من شهد معنا الصلاة وأفاض من عرفات ليلا أو نهارا فقد قضى تفثه وتم حجه
[Sahih]. Abu Dawud narrated it in the Book of Rites, Chapter on One Who Does Not Reach Arafah, h: 1950, from the hadith of Ismail through this route. Tirmidhi said, h: 891, hasan sahih. Ibn Khuzayma graded it sahih, 4/256, as did Ibn Hibban, h: 3839, 3840, and Hakim, 1/463, and Dhahabi.
