He used to give legal opinions permitting tamattu pilgrimage, when a man said to him, "Hold on with some of your rulings, for you do not know what the Commander of the Believers introduced regarding the rites after you left."So he later met Umar and asked him about it.Umar said, "I am well aware that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did it, as did his companions, but I disliked that men should spend their days enjoying intimacy with their wives under the arak trees, then set out for Hajj with their heads still dripping."

أنه كان يفتي بالمتعة فقال له رجل رويدك بعض فتياك فإنك لا تدري ما أحدث أمير المؤمنين في النسك بعدك حتى لقيته بعد فسألته فقال عمر قد علمت أن رسول الله ﷺ فعله وأصحابه ولكني كرهت أن يظلوا بهن معرسين تحت الأراك ثم يروحون بالحج تقطر رءوسهم
