A man asked the Prophet ﷺ what clothing a person in the state of ihram may wear. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, "He must not wear shirts, turbans, trousers, hooded cloaks, or leather socks, unless he cannot find sandals, in which case he may wear leather socks but should cut them so they fall below the ankles. And do not wear any garment touched by saffron or wars dye."
حدثنا أبو مصعب حدثنا مالك بن أنس عن نافع
أن رجلا سأل النبي ﷺ ما يلبس المحرم من الثياب فقال رسول الله ﷺ لا يلبس القمص ولا العمائم ولا السراويلات ولا البرانس ولا الخفاف إلا أن لا يجد نعلين فليلبس خفين وليقطعهما أسفل من الكعبين ولا تلبسوا من الثياب شيئا مسه الزعفران أو الورس
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Hajj, Chapter on What the One in Ihram May Not Wear of Clothing, hadith no. 5803, 1542, and Muslim narrated it in the Book of Hajj, Chapter on What Is Permitted for the One in Ihram for Hajj or Umrah to Wear and What Is Not Permitted, and the Explanation of the Prohibition of Perfume for Him, hadith no. 1177, from the hadith of Malik through this same chain, and it is found in the Muwatta (Yahya version: 1/324, 325, and Abu Musab version: 1/410, 411, hadith no. 1038) with a similar meaning.
