The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Abu Jahm bin Hudhayfah as a collector of zakat. A man disputed with him over his zakat, so Abu Jahm struck him and wounded his head. His people came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, "We demand retaliation, Messenger of Allah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "You shall have such and such," but they were not satisfied. He said, "You shall have such and such," and they were satisfied. The Prophet ﷺ then said, "I am going to address the people and inform them of your acceptance."They said, "Yes."So the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people and said, "These men of Layth came to me seeking retaliation, and I offered them such and such. Are you satisfied?"They said, "No."The Muhajirun were about to strike them, but the Prophet ﷺ ordered them to hold back, so they held back. Then he called the Laythis over and increased the offer, then said, "Are you satisfied?"They said, "Yes."He said, "I am going to address the people and inform them of your acceptance."They said, "Yes."So the Prophet ﷺ addressed the people, then asked, "Are you satisfied?"They said, "Yes."Ibn Majah said, I heard Muhammad bin Yahya say, "Muamar was alone in narrating this. I do not know of anyone else who reported it."
Sourcing, its isnad is daif. Abu Dawud narrated it in the chapter on diyat, the chapter on the official who causes an injury by mistake while carrying out his duties, hadith 4534, from the hadith of Abdul-Razzaq, with this wording, and it is found in his Musannaf, hadith 18032. Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, hadith 845, but I did not find an explicit statement of Zuhri's hearing, as mentioned before at hadith 707. The rest of the chain is sound.
