I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "A borrowed item must be returned, and a gifted loan must be given back."
حدثنا هشام بن عمار حدثنا إسمعيل بن عياش حدثنا شرحبيل بن مسلم قال سمعت
سمعت رسول الله ﷺ يقول العارية مؤداة والمنحة مردودة
[Its chain of transmission is hasan] Tirmidhi narrated it in the Book of Sales, in the chapter on what has been said about a loan being returned, no. 1265, from the hadith of Ismail, with a slight difference in wording, and he said, hasan gharib. Abu Dawud narrated it, no. 3565, at greater length, and Ibn Jarud graded it sahih, no. 1023. It also has another route in Ibn Hibban's Sahih.
