Some men would feed their families generously while others would feed them sparingly, so the verse was revealed, "from the average of what you feed your families" [Maidah 5:89].

Sourcing, its chain is daif, Ibn Jareer Tabari transmitted it, 15/7, and Ibn Abu Hatim, 1193/4, no. 6722, in their respective works of tafsir, from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, through this route, and Busiri graded it sahih.Sufyan practices tadlis, and I did not find an explicit statement of his hearing it directly, nor does it help him that he only practices tadlis from a trustworthy narrator, as I established in the sourcing of Nihayah fil-Fitan wal-Malahim, no. 1030.
