The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us out, three hundred riders, with Abu Ubayda bin Jarra as our commander, to lie in wait for a caravan of Quraysh. We stayed on the coast for half a month and suffered severe hunger, until we ate the leaves of the khabat tree. For this reason, that army was called the Army of the Khabat.Then the sea cast up for us a creature called the Anbar, and we ate from it for half a month and oiled ourselves with its fat until our bodies recovered. Abu Ubayda took one of its ribs and set it up, then brought the tallest man with him.Sufyan said on one occasion, He took one of its ribs and set it up, then took a man and a camel, and the camel passed beneath it.Jabir said, A man from among the people slaughtered three camels, then slaughtered three more, then slaughtered three more, until Abu Ubayda forbade him.Amr used to say, Abu Salih informed us that Qays bin Saad said to his father, "I was in the army."His father asked, "And they went hungry?"He said, "Yes."His father said, "Slaughter."He said, "I slaughtered."His father said, "Then they went hungry again?"He said, "Yes."His father said, "Slaughter."He said, "I slaughtered."His father said, "Then they went hungry again?"He said, "Yes."His father said, "Slaughter."He said, "I slaughtered."His father said, "Then they went hungry again?"He said, "Yes."His father said, "Slaughter."He said, "I was forbidden."
حدثنا علي بن عبد الله حدثنا سفيان قال الذي حفظناه من عمرو بن دينار قال سمعت
بعثنا رسول الله ﷺ ثلاث مائة راكب أميرنا أبو عبيدة بن الجراح نرصد عير قريش فأقمنا بالساحل نصف شهر فأصابنا جوع شديد حتى أكلنا الخبط فسمي ذلك الجيش جيش الخبط فألقى لنا البحر دابة يقال لها العنبر فأكلنا منه نصف شهر وادهنا من ودكه حتى ثابت إلينا أجسامنا فأخذ أبو عبيدة ضلعا من أضلاعه فنصبه فعمد إلى أطول رجل معه قال سفيان مرة ضلعا من أضلاعه فنصبه وأخذ رجلا وبعيرا فمر تحته قال جابر وكان رجل من القوم نحر ثلاث جزائر ثم نحر ثلاث جزائر ثم نحر ثلاث جزائر ثم إن أبا عبيدة نهاه وكان عمرو يقول أخبرنا أبو صالح أن قيس بن سعد قال لأبيه كنت في الجيش فجاعوا قال انحر قال نحرت قال ثم جاعوا قال انحر قال نحرت قال ثم جاعوا قال انحر قال نحرت ثم جاعوا قال انحر قال نهيت
