The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a military expedition toward the coast and placed Abu Ubayda bin al-Jarrah in command over them. We were three hundred men. We set out, and when we were partway along the road, our provisions ran out. Abu Ubayda ordered the army's remaining provisions to be gathered together, and they amounted to two bags of dates. He would ration them out to us each day, a little at a time, until they too were nearly gone, and then each of us was receiving only a single date per day.I asked, "What good can a single date do for you?"He replied, "We truly felt its absence once it was finished."Then we reached the sea, and there we found a fish as large as a small hill. The men ate from it for eighteen nights. Then Abu Ubayda ordered two of its ribs to be set up, and he ordered a riding-camel to be saddled, and it passed beneath them without touching them.
حدثنا إسماعيل قال حدثني مالك عن وهب بن كيسان
بعث رسول الله ﷺ بعثا قبل الساحل وأمر عليهم أبا عبيدة بن الجراح وهم ثلاث مائة فخرجنا وكنا ببعض الطريق فني الزاد فأمر أبو عبيدة بأزواد الجيش فجمع فكان مزودي تمر فكان يقوتنا كل يوم قليل قليل حتى فني فلم يكن يصيبنا إلا تمرة تمرة فقلت ما تغني عنكم تمرة فقال لقد وجدنا فقدها حين فنيت ثم انتهينا إلى البحر فإذا حوت مثل الظرب فأكل منها القوم ثماني عشرة ليلة ثم أمر أبو عبيدة بضلعين من أضلاعه فنصبا ثم أمر براحلة فرحلت ثم مرت تحتهما فلم تصبهما
