Ayesha said, I never knew my parents to be following anything other than this religion, and not a day passed without the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visiting us at both ends of the day, in the morning and the evening. When the Muslims were persecuted, Abu Bakr set out as an emigrant heading toward the land of Abyssinia. When he reached Bark al-Ghimad, Ibn al-Daghinah, the chief of al-Qarah, met him and asked, "Where are you headed, Abu Bakr?"Abu Bakr replied, "My people have driven me out, so I want to travel through the land and worship my Lord."Ibn al-Daghinah said, "Someone like you, Abu Bakr, should not leave nor be driven out. You help the destitute, maintain ties of kinship, bear the burdens of others, host the guest, and assist in the calamities of truth. I am your protector. Return and worship your Lord in your own land."So Abu Bakr returned, and Ibn al-Daghinah traveled with him. In the evening, Ibn al-Daghinah went around to the nobles of Quraysh and said to them, "Someone like Abu Bakr should not leave nor be driven out. Would you expel a man who helps the destitute, maintains ties of kinship, bears the burdens of others, hosts the guest, and assists in the calamities of truth?"Quraysh did not reject Ibn al-Daghinah's protection, but they said to him, "Tell Abu Bakr to worship his Lord inside his house. Let him pray there and recite whatever he wishes, but he must not disturb us with that nor make it public, for we fear that he may seduce our women and children."Ibn al-Daghinah conveyed this to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr remained that way, worshipping his Lord in his house, not making his prayer public, and not reciting outside his home. Then it occurred to Abu Bakr to build a place of prayer in the courtyard of his house, where he would pray and recite the Quran. The women and children of the polytheists would gather around him in amazement, watching him. Abu Bakr was a man who wept easily and could not control his eyes when he recited the Quran. This alarmed the noblemen of Quraysh among the polytheists, so they sent for Ibn al-Daghinah, and he came to them. They said, "We granted Abu Bakr protection under your guarantee on the condition that he worship his Lord inside his house, but he has gone beyond that. He has built a place of prayer in the courtyard of his house and openly performs prayer and recitation in it. We fear that he may seduce our women and children, so forbid him. If he is willing to confine himself to worshipping his Lord inside his house, let him do so. But if he refuses and insists on making it public, then ask him to return your guarantee to you, for we dislike breaking our pact with you, yet we will not allow Abu Bakr to act openly."Ayesha continued, So Ibn al-Daghinah came to Abu Bakr and said, "You know the terms upon which I made the agreement with you. Either you confine yourself to that, or you return my guarantee to me, for I do not want the Arabs to hear that I broke my pact regarding a man with whom I made an agreement."Abu Bakr replied, "I return your protection to you, and I am content with the protection of Allah ."The Prophet ﷺ was in Mecca at that time, and he said to the Muslims, "I have been shown the place of your emigration, a land of date palms between two lava tracts," meaning the two harrahs. So those who emigrated set out for Medina, and most of those who had emigrated to Abyssinia returned to Medina. Abu Bakr also prepared to leave for Medina, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Wait, for I hope I will be given permission to leave."Abu Bakr asked, "Do you really hope for that, may my father be your ransom?"He answered, "Yes."So Abu Bakr held himself back to accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he fed two riding camels he had with samur leaves, that is, khabat, for four months.Ibn Shihab said, Urwa said, Ayesha said, While we were sitting one day in Abu Bakr's house at the hottest part of noon, someone said to Abu Bakr, "Here is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming, with his head covered, at a time when he does not usually come to us."Abu Bakr said, "May my father and mother be his ransom. By Allah, nothing has brought him at this hour except some important matter."She said, The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and asked permission to enter, which was granted, and he entered. The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, "Send out those who are with you."Abu Bakr said, "They are only your family, may my father be your ransom, Messenger of Allah."He said, "I have been given permission to leave."Abu Bakr asked, "Will I accompany you, may my father be your ransom, Messenger of Allah?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes."Abu Bakr said, "Then take, may my father be your ransom, Messenger of Allah, one of these two riding camels of mine."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "For a price."Ayesha said, So we prepared their provisions in the greatest haste, and we made them food in a leather bag. Asma bint Abu Bakr cut off a piece of her waistband and tied it around the mouth of the bag, and that is why she was named "Dhat al-Nitaqayn," the one with two waistbands. She said, Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr reached a cave on Mount Thawr and hid there for three nights. Abdullah bin Abu Bakr, an intelligent and quick-witted young man, would spend the night with them and slip away from them just before dawn, reaching Quraysh in Mecca by morning as if he had spent the night there. He would memorize every plot they devised against the two and bring them word of it after nightfall.Amir bin Fuhayrah, the freed slave of Abu Bakr, would graze a flock of milking sheep for them and bring them back to them after a portion of the evening had passed, so they would spend the night with fresh milk, the milk of their flock, freshly warmed. Amir bin Fuhayrah would drive the flock away again before daybreak. He did this on every one of those three nights. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr hired a man from the tribe of Banu al-Deel, from the clan of Banu Abd bin Adi, as an expert guide, the khirreet being one skilled in guiding. He had taken an oath of allegiance to the family of al-As bin Waail al-Sahmi and followed the religion of the disbelievers of Quraysh, but they trusted him and handed over their camels to him, agreeing to meet him at the cave of Thawr after three nights, bringing their two camels on the morning of the third day.Amir bin Fuhayrah went with them, along with the guide, who took them by the coastal road.
حدثنا يحيى بن بكير حدثنا الليث عن عقيل قال ابن شهاب فأخبرني عروة بن الزبير أن
