Suraqa bin Jasham reported,

Messengers from the disbelievers of Quraysh came to us offering a reward equal to the blood-money of each man, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr, for whoever killed or captured them. While I was sitting in one of the gatherings of my people, Banu Mudlij, a man from among them came forward and stood over us as we sat. He said, "Suraqa, I just saw some dark figures by the coast. I think they are Muhammad and his companions."Suraqa said, I knew it was them, but I said to him, "They are not them. You only saw so-and-so and so-and-so who set out before our eyes."I remained in the gathering for a while, then I got up and went home. I ordered my slave-girl to bring out my horse, which was behind a hillock, and to keep it waiting for me. I took my spear and went out the back of the house, dragging the spear's butt along the ground while keeping its head lowered, until I reached my horse and mounted her. I urged her into a quick pace until I drew near them. Then my horse stumbled and I fell off. I got up and reached for my quiver, took out the divining arrows, and cast lots with them to see whether I would harm them or not. The result I disliked came out. Yet I mounted my horse and disobeyed the arrows. She carried me on swiftly until, when I could hear the recitation of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who was not looking back, while Abu Bakr kept turning to look, my horse's forelegs sank into the ground up to the knees. I fell off her, then I urged her on. She rose with difficulty, scarcely able to free her legs. When she stood upright, smoke rose from where her legs had sunk, soaring into the sky like a column.I cast lots again with the divining arrows, and again the result I disliked came out. So I called out to them seeking safe passage. They stopped. I mounted my horse and came up to them. It had occurred to me, when I encountered the obstruction that prevented me from reaching them, that the cause of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would prevail.I said to him, "Your people have placed a blood-money reward on your head." I told them what people intended toward them and offered them provisions and supplies, but they took nothing from me and asked nothing of me except that he said, "Conceal our whereabouts from those behind us."I asked him to write me a guarantee of safety, so he ordered Amir bin Fuhayra, who wrote it on a piece of leather. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued on his way.Ibn Shihab said, Urwa bin Zubayr informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Zubayr in a caravan of Muslims who were merchants returning from Syria. Zubayr clothed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr in white garments. The Muslims in Medina had heard of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ departure from Mecca, so they used to go out every morning to the Harra and wait for him until the heat of midday turned them back. One day they returned after a long wait, and once they had retreated to their homes, a Jewish man climbed up onto one of their fortified towers to see something he was watching for. He caught sight of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions, dressed in white, the mirage rippling around them. The Jew could not contain himself and called out at the top of his voice, "People of Arabia, here is your prince whom you have been awaiting!"The Muslims rushed to their weapons and met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the high ground of the Harra. He turned with them to the right until he alighted among them in the quarter of Banu Amr bin Awf. That was on Monday in the month of Rabi Awwal.Abu Bakr stood to receive the people while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat in silence. The Ansar who had not yet seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began coming and greeting Abu Bakr, until the sun reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then Abu Bakr came forward and shaded him with his cloak, and at that the people recognized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed in the quarter of Banu Amr bin Awf for some ten nights, and he founded the mosque that was founded on piety, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in it. Then he mounted his she-camel and rode on, with the people walking alongside him, until she knelt down at the site of the Messenger's ﷺ mosque in Medina, where some Muslim men were praying that day. The site was a date-drying yard belonging to Suhayl and Sahl, two orphan boys under the care of Asaad bin Zurara. When his she-camel knelt, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This, Allah willing, is the place to stay."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the two boys and bargained with them for the yard so he could take it as a mosque. They said, "No, rather we will give it to you as a gift, Messenger of Allah."But the Messenger of Allah refused to accept it from them as a gift until he had purchased it from them. Then he built it as a mosque. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began carrying the bricks with them as it was being built, and he would say as he carried the bricks, "This load is not the load of Khaybar. This is more virtuous, our Lord, and purer."And he would say, "O Allah, the true reward is the reward of the Hereafter, so have mercy on the Ansar and the Muhajirun."He was quoting the verse of a Muslim man whose name was not given to me.Ibn Shihab said, It has not reached us in the reports that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever quoted a complete line of poetry other than this one.
