The first woman to use a waist-belt was Ismail's mother. She wore a belt so as to hide her tracks from Sarah. Then Ibrahim brought her along with her son Ismail, whom she was still nursing, and set them down near the House beside a large tree above Zamzam, in the upper part of the masjid. There was no one in Makkah in those days, and there was no water there. He set them down in that place and left with them a leather bag containing dates and a waterskin containing water. Then Ibrahim turned and set off.Ismail's mother followed him and said, "Ibrahim, where are you going, leaving us in this valley where there is no human being and nothing at all?"She repeated this to him several times, but he would not turn to look at her. Then she asked, "Is it Allah who commanded you to do this?"He answered, "Yes."She said, "Then He will not let us perish."So she went back, and Ibrahim continued on his way until he reached the mountain pass, where they could no longer see him. There he turned his face toward the House, raised his hands, and prayed with these words, "My Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in a valley without cultivation, near Your sacred House" up to "that they may be grateful" [Ibrahim 14:37].Ismail's mother went on nursing Ismail and drinking from that water until what was in the waterskin was used up. Then she grew thirsty, and her son grew thirsty too. She watched him writhing, or as he said, rolling about, and she walked away because she could not bear to look at him. She found that Safa was the nearest hill to her in that land, so she stood upon it and turned toward the valley, looking to see whether anyone was there, but she saw no one. So she came down from Safa, and when she reached the valley floor she lifted the hem of her garment and ran the run of someone in distress until she had crossed the valley. Then she came to Marwa and stood upon it and looked to see whether anyone was there, but she saw no one. She did this seven times.Ibn Abbas said, The Prophet ﷺ said, "That is why people run between the two."When she reached the top of Marwa she heard a voice. She said, "Hush," speaking to herself. Then she listened carefully and heard it again. She said, "I have heard you. If you have any help, then help."And there was the angel at the place of Zamzam. He dug with his heel, or as he said, with his wing, until the water appeared. She began to make a basin around it, scooping with her hand like this, and she began to fill her waterskin from the water, and it kept gushing up after she scooped.Ibn Abbas said, The Prophet ﷺ said, "May Allah have mercy on Ismail's mother. Had she left Zamzam alone," or he said, "had she not scooped from the water, Zamzam would have been a flowing spring."He continued, so she drank and nursed her child. The angel said to her, "Do not fear that you will be abandoned, for here is the House of Allah, which this boy and his father will build, and Allah does not abandon His people."The site of the House was raised above the ground like a mound, and the floods would come and cut away at its right and its left. Things went on like that until a company from Jurhum, or a household from Jurhum, passed by them, coming along the road from Kada. They camped in the lower part of Makkah and saw a bird circling. They said, "This bird must be circling over water. We know this valley, and there was no water in it." So they sent one or two messengers, and there indeed was the water. They returned and told them about it, and the people came forward.Ismail's mother was at the water, and they said, "Will you allow us to camp beside you?"She replied, "Yes, but you have no right to the water."They said, "Agreed."Ibn Abbas said, The Prophet ﷺ said, "Ismail's mother found this agreeable, for she loved company."So they camped there and sent word to their families, who came and camped with them, until there were several households of them living there. The boy grew up and learned Arabic from them, and as he grew he became dear to them and they admired him. When he reached manhood they married him to a woman from among them, and then Ismail's mother died.Ibrahim came after Ismail's marriage to see about those he had left behind, but he did not find Ismail, so he asked his wife about him.She said, "He has gone out to seek provision for us."Then he asked her about their living and their condition. She said, "We are badly off. We are in hardship and difficulty." So she complained to him.He said, "When your husband comes, convey to him and tell him to change the threshold of his door."When Ismail came, it was as though he sensed something. He asked, "Has anyone come to you?"She said, "Yes, an old man of such and such a description came to us and asked about you, and I told him. He asked me how our living was, and I told him that we are in hardship and difficulty."He asked, "Did he leave you any instruction?"She said, "Yes, he told me to convey greetings of peace to you, and he says, change the threshold of your door."Ismail said, "That was my father, and he has commanded me to part from you. Go back to your family." So he divorced her and married another woman from among them.Ibrahim stayed away from them as long as Allah willed, then he came to them again and did not find Ismail. He went in to his wife and asked her about him.She said, "He has gone out to seek provision for us."He asked, "How are you?" and he asked her about their living and their condition. She said, "We are well and have plenty," and she praised Allah. He asked, "What is your food?"She said, "Meat."He asked, "And what is your drink?"She said, "Water."He said, "Allah, bless them in meat and water."The Prophet ﷺ said, "They had no grain in those days, and had they had it, he would have prayed for blessing in that too."He said, these two, meat and water, do not agree with anyone who lives on them alone outside Makkah.Ibrahim said, "When your husband comes, convey
to him and tell him to keep firm the threshold of his door."When Ismail came he asked, "Has anyone come to you?"She said, "Yes, a fine looking old man came to us," and she spoke well of him. "He asked me about you and I told him, and he asked me how our living was and I told him we are well."He asked, "Did he leave you any instruction?"She said, "Yes. He conveys greetings of peace to you and instructs you to keep firm the threshold of your door."Ismail said, "That was my father, and you are the threshold. He has commanded me to keep you."Then Ibrahim stayed away from them as long as Allah willed. After that he came, and Ismail was trimming arrows for himself beneath a large tree near Zamzam. When he saw him he rose to meet him, and they did as a father does with his son and a son with his father. Then Ibrahim said, "Ismail, Allah has commanded me with something."Ismail said, "Then do what your Lord has commanded you."Ibrahim asked, "Will you help me?"He said, "I will help you."Ibrahim said, "Allah has commanded me to build a House here," and he pointed to a mound raised above the ground around it.At that point they raised the foundations of the House. Ismail would bring the stones and Ibrahim would build, and when the building rose high, Ismail brought this stone and set it down for him. Ibrahim stood upon it and went on building while Ismail handed him the stones, and the two of them were saying, "Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing" [Baqarah 2:127]. They kept building, going around the House, and they were saying, "Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing" [Baqarah 2:127].
و حدثني عبد الله بن محمد حدثنا عبد الرزاق أخبرنا معمر عن أيوب السختياني وكثير بن كثير بن المطلب بن أبي وداعة يزيد أحدهما على الآخر عن سعيد بن جبير قال
