When things came to a head between Ibrahim and his household, he set out with Ismail and Ismail's mother, taking with them a waterskin. Ismail's mother would drink from the skin and her milk would flow for her child. So it went until he brought them to Makkah and set her down beneath a great tree. Then Ibrahim turned back toward his household, and Ismail's mother followed after him. When they reached Kada she called out to him from behind,"Ibrahim, to whom are you leaving us?"He answered, "To Allah."She said, "Then I am content with Allah."So she went back and kept drinking from the waterskin, and her milk kept flowing for her child, until the water ran out. She said to herself, "If I go and look about, perhaps I will catch sight of someone." So she went and climbed Safa and looked, and looked again, to see if she could catch sight of anyone, but she saw no one. When she came down into the valley bed she ran, and came to Marwa. She did this for several rounds. Then she said, "If only I could go and see what has become of him," meaning the child. So she went and looked, and there he was as she had left him, as though gasping in the throes of death. Her heart could not rest, so she said, "If I go and look about, perhaps I will catch sight of someone." She went and climbed Safa and looked, and looked again, and saw no one, until she had completed seven rounds. Then she said, "If only I could go and see what has become of him."Suddenly she heard a voice, and she said, "Help, if you have any good with you!" And there was Jibreel. He did this with his heel, pressing his heel into the ground, and water gushed forth. Ismail's mother was astonished and began hurriedly scooping it up.Abu Qasim ﷺ said, "Had she left it alone, the water would have flowed on the surface."She began to drink from the water, and her milk flowed for her child.Then some people of Jurhum passed through the valley bed and saw birds circling. This struck them as strange, and they said, "Birds only gather over water." So they sent their scout, and he looked, and there indeed was water. He came back and told them, and they came to her and said, "Ismail's mother, will you permit us to be with you," or "to settle with you?" Her son grew up and married a woman from among them.Later it occurred to Ibrahim to visit, and he said to his household, "I am going to look in on those I left behind." He came and greeted the house and asked, "Where is Ismail?"His wife said, "He has gone hunting."Ibrahim said, "Tell him when he comes to change the threshold of his door."When Ismail came she told him, and he said, "You are the one meant. Go back to your family."Then again it occurred to Ibrahim to visit, and he said to his household, "I am going to look in on those I left behind." He came and asked, "Where is Ismail?"His wife said, "He has gone hunting." Then she said, "Will you not come down and eat and drink?"He asked, "What is your food and what is your drink?"She said, "Our food is meat and our drink is water."He said, "Allah, bless them in their food and their drink."Abu Qasim ﷺ said, "A blessing through the supplication of Ibrahim, may Allah's blessings and peace be upon them both."Then again it occurred to Ibrahim to visit, and he said to his household, "I am going to look in on those I left behind." He came and found Ismail behind Zamzam mending some arrows of his. He said, "Ismail, your Lord has commanded me to build Him a house."Ismail said, "Then obey your Lord."Ibrahim said, "He has commanded that you help me with it."Ismail said, "Then I will do it," or words to that effect.So the two of them set to work. Ibrahim would build and Ismail would hand him the stones, and both of them were saying, "Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing" [Baqarah 2:127]. When the structure rose high and the old man grew too weak to lift the stones, he stood upon the stone of the Maqam, and Ismail kept handing him the stones, and both of them were saying, "Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing" [Baqarah 2:127].
حدثنا عبد الله بن محمد حدثنا أبو عامر عبد الملك بن عمرو قال حدثنا إبراهيم بن نافع عن كثير بن كثير عن سعيد بن جبير
لما كان بين إبراهيم وبين أهله ما كان خرج بإسماعيل وأم إسماعيل ومعهم شنة فيها ماء فجعلت أم إسماعيل تشرب من الشنة فيدر لبنها على صبيها حتى قدم مكة فوضعها تحت دوحة ثم رجع إبراهيم إلى أهله فاتبعته أم إسماعيل حتى لما بلغوا كداء نادته من ورائه يا إبراهيم إلى من تتركنا قال إلى الله قالت رضيت بالله قال فرجعت فجعلت تشرب من الشنة ويدر لبنها على صبيها حتى لما فني الماء قالت لو ذهبت فنظرت لعلي أحس أحدا قال فذهبت فصعدت الصفا فنظرت ونظرت هل تحس أحدا فلم تحس أحدا فلما بلغت الوادي سعت وأتت المروة ففعلت ذلك أشواطا ثم قالت لو ذهبت فنظرت ما فعل تعني الصبي فذهبت فنظرت فإذا هو على حاله كأنه ينشغ للموت فلم تقرها نفسها فقالت لو ذهبت فنظرت لعلي أحس أحدا فذهبت فصعدت الصفا فنظرت ونظرت فلم تحس أحدا حتى أتمت سبعا ثم قالت لو ذهبت فنظرت ما فعل فإذا هي بصوت فقالت أغث إن كان عندك خير فإذا جبريل قال فقال بعقبه هكذا وغمز عقبه على الأرض قال فانبثق الماء فدهشت أم إسماعيل فجعلت تحفز قال فقال أبو القاسم ﷺ لو تركته كان الماء ظاهرا قال فجعلت تشرب من الماء ويدر لبنها على صبيها قال فمر ناس من جرهم ببطن الوادي فإذا هم بطير كأنهم أنكروا ذاك وقالوا ما يكون الطير إلا على ماء فبعثوا رسولهم فنظر فإذا هم بالماء فأتاهم فأخبرهم فأتوا إليها فقالوا يا أم إسماعيل أتأذنين لنا أن نكون معك أو نسكن معك فبلغ ابنها فنكح فيهم امرأة قال ثم إنه بدا لإبراهيم فقال لأهله إني مطلع تركتي قال فجاء فسلم فقال أين إسماعيل فقالت امرأته ذهب يصيد قال قولي له إذا جاء غير عتبة بابك فلما جاء أخبرته قال أنت ذاك فاذهبي إلى أهلك قال ثم إنه بدا لإبراهيم فقال لأهله إني مطلع تركتي قال فجاء فقال أين إسماعيل فقالت امرأته ذهب يصيد فقالت ألا تنزل فتطعم وتشرب فقال وما طعامكم وما شرابكم قالت طعامنا اللحم وشرابنا الماء قال اللهم بارك لهم في طعامهم وشرابهم قال فقال أبو القاسم ﷺ بركة بدعوة إبراهيم صلى الله عليهما وسلم قال ثم إنه بدا لإبراهيم فقال لأهله إني مطلع تركتي فجاء فوافق إسماعيل من وراء زمزم يصلح نبلا له فقال يا إسماعيل إن ربك أمرني أن أبني له بيتا قال أطع ربك قال إنه قد أمرني أن تعينني عليه قال إذن أفعل أو كما قال قال فقاما فجعل إبراهيم يبني وإسماعيل يناوله الحجارة ويقولان {ربنا تقبل منا إنك أنت السميع العليم} قال حتى ارتفع البناء وضعف الشيخ عن نقل الحجارة فقام على حجر المقام فجعل يناوله الحجارة ويقولان {ربنا تقبل منا إنك أنت السميع العليم}
