Abu Qatada reported,

We set out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the year of Hunayn. When we met the enemy, the Muslims fell into some disarray. I saw one of the polytheists overpowering a Muslim man, so I circled around until I came at him from behind and struck him with my sword on the tendon of his shoulder. He turned on me and seized me in such a grip that I sensed the smell of death from it, then death overtook him and he released me.I caught up with Umar bin Khattab and asked, "What is the matter with the people?"He replied, "It is the command of Allah."Then the people returned, and the Prophet ﷺ sat down and announced, "Whoever has killed an enemy and has proof of it, the spoils taken from him are his."I stood up and asked, "Who will bear witness for me?" Then I sat down.He said again, "Whoever has killed an enemy and has proof of it, the spoils taken from him are his."I stood up and asked, "Who will bear witness for me?" Then I sat down.He said it a third time, the same as before. I stood up, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is wrong, Abu Qatada?"I related the story to him.A man said, "He has spoken the truth, Messenger of Allah, and the man's spoils are with me. Have him agree to let me keep them."Abu Bakr al-Siddiq said, "No, by Allah! He would not turn to one of the lions of Allah who fights on behalf of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and give you his spoils."The Prophet ﷺ said, "He has spoken the truth," and handed them over to me. I sold the coat of mail and with the proceeds bought a small grove of palm trees among the Banu Salama, and it was the first property I acquired in Islam.

حدثنا عبد الله بن مسلمة عن مالك عن يحيى بن سعيد عن ابن أفلح عن أبي محمد مولى أبي قتادة

عن أبي قتادة رضي الله عنه قال

خرجنا مع رسول الله ﷺ عام حنين فلما التقينا كانت للمسلمين جولة فرأيت رجلا من المشركين علا رجلا من المسلمين فاستدرت حتى أتيته من ورائه حتى ضربته بالسيف على حبل عاتقه فأقبل علي فضمني ضمة وجدت منها ريح الموت ثم أدركه الموت فأرسلني فلحقت عمر بن الخطاب فقلت ما بال الناس قال أمر الله ثم إن الناس رجعوا وجلس النبي ﷺ فقال من قتل قتيلا له عليه بينة فله سلبه فقمت فقلت من يشهد لي ثم جلست ثم قال من قتل قتيلا له عليه بينة فله سلبه فقمت فقلت من يشهد لي ثم جلست ثم قال الثالثة مثله فقمت فقال رسول الله ﷺ ما لك يا أبا قتادة فاقتصصت عليه القصة فقال رجل صدق يا رسول الله وسلبه عندي فأرضه عني فقال أبو بكر الصديق رضي الله عنه لاها الله إذا لا يعمد إلى أسد من أسد الله يقاتل عن الله ورسوله ﷺ يعطيك سلبه فقال النبي ﷺ صدق فأعطاه فبعت الدرع فابتعت به مخرفا في بني سلمة فإنه لأول مال تأثلته في الإسلام
