Asma bint Umays said, "Messenger of Allah, the children of Jafar are being affected by the evil eye. Shall I seek a ruqyah for them?"He replied, "Yes, for if anything were to outrun destiny, it would be the evil eye."
يا رسول الله، إن بني جعفر تصيبهم العين، فأسترقي لهم؟ قال: نعم، فلو كان شيء سابق القدر، سبقته العين.
Tirmidhi (2059) and Ibn Majah (3510) both narrated it from the hadith of Sufyan bin Uyayna, from Amr bin Dinar, from Urwa bin Amir, from Ubayd bin Rifa Zurqi, who said, Asma said, and he then related it. Imam Ahmad (27470) also narrated it by this same route. Tirmidhi said, "Hasan sahih."I say, it is hasan only, for Urwa bin Amir and his teacher Ubayd bin Rifa are both merely "truthful" (sadooq), nothing more. Furthermore, the statement of Ubayd bin Rifa Zurqi, who said, Asma said, appears on its face to indicate a disconnected transmission (irsal). However, Tirmidhi said after that, "This has also been narrated from Ayub, from Amr bin Dinar, from Urwa bin Amir, from Ubayd bin Rifa, from Asma bint Umays, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said. Hasan bin Ali Khallal told us this, [saying] Abdul-Razzaq told us, from Maamar, from Ayub, with this wording."I say, this chain is connected, and it is the more sahih version, as Daraqutni stated in al-Ilal (15/304).As for his statement, "and even if something could outrun the divine decree," this means that all things occur by the decree of Allah, may He be exalted, and nothing happens except according to what Allah, may He be exalted, has decreed for it, His knowledge having preceded it. So the harm of the evil eye, and nothing else of good or ill, occurs except by the decree of Allah, may He be exalted.
