He said to his son, "My son, you will never taste the true essence of faith until you know that what has befallen you could never have missed you, and what has missed you could never have befallen you. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'The first thing Allah created was the Pen. He said to it, Write. It said, My Lord, what shall I write? He said, Write the decrees of all things until the Hour arrives.'My son, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Whoever dies upon other than this is not of me.'"
Abu Dawud (4700) narrated it from Jafar bin Musafir Hudhali, who said, Yahya bin Hassan narrated to us, Walid bin Rabah narrated to us, from Ibrahim bin Abu Abla, from Abu Hafsa, who said, Ubada bin Samit said to his son, and he mentioned the hadith. Its chain is hasan, due to some discussion regarding Jafar bin Musafir, the shaykh of Abu Dawud, though he is hasan al-hadith, and the narration has been corroborated. Abu Hafsa is Hubaysh bin Shurayh Habashi, also said to be Abu Hafs Shami. Abdul-Rahman bin Ibrahim said, He met Ubada and preserved narrations from him. Bukhari, Ibn Abu Hatim, Ibn Hibban, and others mentioned him among the Tabiin. Abu Naeem mentioned him among the Companions, but this is a mistake on his part. Ibn Hibban graded him thiqa, and Ibrahim bin Abu Abla and Ali bin Abu Hamalah narrated from him. Hafiz said of him in Taqrib, "Maqbul." I say, that is indeed the case, but he has been corroborated.Tirmidhi (2155, 3319) narrated it from Yahya bin Musa, who said, Abu Dawud Tayalisi (577) narrated to us, Abdul-Wahid bin Sulaym narrated to us, who said, I came to Makkah and met Ata bin Abu Rabah, and I said to him, "O Abu Muhammad, the people of Basra speak about qadar." He said, "O my son, do you recite the Quran?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Then recite Surah Zukhruf." So I recited, "Ha Mim. By the clear Book. Indeed, We have made it an Arabic Quran that you might understand. And indeed it is, in the mother of the Book with Us, exalted and full of wisdom" [Zukhruf 43:1–4]. He said, "Do you know what the mother of the Book is?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "It is a book that Allah wrote before He created the heavens and before He created the earth. In it is that Pharaoh is among the people of the Fire, and in it is 'Perish the hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he'."Ata said, Then I met Walid bin Ubada bin Samit, a companion of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I asked him, "What was your father's final counsel at the time of his death?" He said, "My father called me and said to me, 'O my son, fear Allah, and know that you will never truly fear Allah until you believe in Allah and believe in qadar in its entirety, both its good and its evil. If you die holding any belief other than this, you will enter the Fire. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "The first thing Allah created was the Pen. He said to it, 'Write.' It said, 'What shall I write?' He said, 'Write down the decree of all that has happened and all that will happen forever.'"'"Tirmidhi said in the first place, "A gharib hadith from this route." And he said in the second place, after mentioning the marfu portion without the story, "Hasan gharib, and on this subject there is also a narration from Ibn Abbas." I say, in it is Abdul-Wahid bin Sulaym, who is daif as stated in Taqrib, however this hadith has other routes.Among them is what Imam Ahmad (22705) narrated from Abu Ala Hasan bin Sawwar, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Muawiya, from Ayub bin Ziyad, who said, Ubada bin Walid bin Ubada narrated to me, who said, My father narrated to me, who said, I went in to see Ubada while he was ill, and he mentioned the hadith along with the story. Layth here is Ibn Saad, and Ayub bin Ziyad is Abu Zayd Himsi, whom Ibn Hibban graded thiqa, and a group of narrators transmitted from him, placing him at the rank of "Maqbul" according to Hafiz, and he is among the men of Tajil. There are other chains for it as well, some of which Ibn Abu Asim extracted in his book Sunnah. So Tirmidhi's statement that it is hasan is confirmed, just as his statement that it is gharib is likewise confirmed, since all of its chains revolve around Walid bin Ubada bin Samit, who is thiqa.
