Umar sought permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while some women from Quraysh were with him, talking to him and asking him for more, their voices raised above his. When Umar asked permission to enter, they hurried to put on their veils. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave him permission to enter while he was laughing.Umar said, "May Allah keep you smiling, Messenger of Allah. What has made you laugh?"He replied, "I am amazed at these women who were with me. When they heard your voice, they hurried to cover themselves."Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, you are more deserving of being held in awe."Then Umar turned to the women and said, "Enemies of your own selves, do you fear me but not fear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"They answered, "Yes, you are harsher and sterner than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "By the One in whose hand my soul rests, Satan has never met you walking down a path without taking a different path from yours."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of the Beginning of Creation (3294), and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2396), both through the route of Ibrahim bin Saad, from Salih, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Abdul-Hameed bin Abdul-Rahman bin Zayd informed me, that Muhammad bin Saad bin Abu Waqqas informed him, that his father Saad bin Abu Waqqas said, and then he mentioned it.
