The Prophet ﷺ fell ill, and his illness grew severe. He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Ayesha said, "He is a tender-hearted man. If he stands in your place, he will not be able to lead the people in prayer."He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."She repeated her objection, and he said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. You women are like the companions of Yusuf."So the messenger went to Abu Bakr, and he led the people in prayer during the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ.
Bukhari narrated it in adhan (678), and Muslim in the Book of Prayer (101:420), both of them through Husayn bin Ali, from Zaida, from Abdul-Malik bin Umayr, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, who related it.
