The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said during his illness, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Ayesha said, "I said, 'Abu Bakr, when he stands in your place, will not be able to make the people hear him because of his weeping. So tell Umar to lead the prayer instead.'"He said, "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Ayesha then said to Hafsah, "Tell him, 'Abu Bakr, when he stands in your place, will not be able to make the people hear him because of his weeping, so tell Umar to lead the people in prayer.'"Hafsah did so, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stop. You women are indeed like the companions of Yusuf. Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer."Hafsah said to Ayesha, "I was never going to get any good from you."
أن رسول الله ﷺ قال في مرضه: مروا أبا بكر يصلي بالناس، قالت عائشة: قلت: إن أبا بكر إذا قام في مقامك لم يسمع الناس من البكاء، فمر عمر فليصل، فقال: مروا أبا بكر فليصل للناس، قالت عائشة لحفصة: قولي له: إن أبا بكر إذا قام في مقامك لم يسمع الناس من البكاء، فمر عمر فليصل للناس، ففعلت حفصة، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: مه، إنكن لأنتن صواحب يوسف، مروا أبا بكر فليصل للناس. قالت حفصة لعائشة: ما كنت لأصيب منك خيرا.
Malik narrated it in Kitab Qasr al-Salah fi al-Safar (89) from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and he mentioned it. Bukhari narrated it through his route in al-Adhan (679). Muslim narrated it in Kitab al-Salah (79:418) through another route from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, with similar wording.
