A delegation from the tribe of Banu Tamim came to the Prophet ﷺ.Abu Bakr said, "Appoint Qaqa bin Mabad bin Zurara over them."Umar said, "No, appoint Aqra bin Habis."Abu Bakr said, "You only mean to oppose me."Umar replied, "I do not mean to oppose you."They kept arguing until their voices rose, and concerning this was revealed, "You who believe, do not put yourselves forward" [Hujurat 49:1], to the end of the verse.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4367), from Ibrahim bin Musa, who said, Hisham bin Yusuf told us, that Ibn Jurayj informed them, from Ibn Abu Mulayka, that Abdullah bin Zubayr informed them, and he related it.
