We came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, four hundred and forty riders, asking him for food. He said to Umar, "Go and give them something."Umar replied, "Messenger of Allah, only a few measures of dates remain, and I do not think they will last me through the summer."He said, "Go and give them."Umar said, "I hear and obey."Umar then took the key from his waistband and opened the door, and there was a heap of dates resembling a young camel kneeling down. He said to us, "Take."Each man took as much as he wished. Then I turned around, and I was among the last of the people, and it was as if we had not taken a single date.
أتينا رسول الله ﷺ أربعين راكبا وأربع مائة، نسأله الطعام، فقال لعمر: اذهب فأعطهم فقال: يا رسول الله، ما بقي إلا آصع من تمر ما أرى أن يقيظني، قال: اذهب فأعطهم قال: سمعا وطاعة. قال: فأخرج عمر المفتاح من حجزته، ففتح الباب، فإذا شبه الفصيل الرابض من تمر، فقال لنا: خذوا. فأخذ كل رجل منا ما أحب، ثم التفت، وكنت من آخر القوم، وكأنا لم نزرأ تمرة.
Ahmad (17577) narrated it, and this is his wording, and Abu Dawud (5238) narrated it in an abridged form, and Ibn Hibban (6528) and Tabarani in al-Kabir (4/270–271) also narrated it, all of them through routes from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Qays bin Abu Hazim, who said, Dukayn bin Saeed Muzani narrated to me, and he mentioned it. Its isnad is sahih. Haythami said in al-Majma (8/304–305), "Abu Dawud narrated a portion of it, and Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it, and the men of both are the men of the Sahih."His saying, "ma yuqizuni," with the doubled consonant, means, what suffices me. His saying, "al-fasil al-rabid" refers to the young weaned camel that is sitting and settled. His saying, "lam nurza" means, we suffered no loss or were not afflicted.
