I came to the Prophet ﷺ with some dates and said, "Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to bless them for me."He gathered them together and prayed for blessing in them, then said to me, "Take them and put them in this provision-bag of yours. Whenever you want to take something from it, put your hand inside and take from it, but do not pour it out."I carried from those dates such-and-such number of camel-loads in the cause of Allah. We used to eat from it and feed others from it, and the bag never left my waist until the day Uthman was killed, when it was lost.
Reported by Tirmidhi (3839), and this is his wording, Ahmad (8628), Ibn Hibban (6532), and Bayhaqi in Dalail (6/109), all of them through routes back to Hammad bin Zayd, from Muhajir, from Abu Aliyah Riyahi, from Abu Hurairah, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Muhajir (that is, Ibn Mukhlid), for he is disputed, though his hadith is hasan. Tirmidhi said, This is a hasan gharib hadith from this route. It has also been narrated through another route from Abu Hurairah, who said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave me some dates, and I put them in a basket of ours, and we hung it in the ceiling of the house, and we kept eating from it until, at the very end, the people of Syria got hold of it when they raided Madinah." This was reported by Ahmad (8299) from Abu Amir (that is, Aqdi Abdul-Malik bin Amr Basri), who said, Ismail, meaning Ibn Muslim, narrated to us from Abu Mutawakkil (whose name was Ali bin Dawud Naji), from Abu Hurairah, and he related it.The statement in the hadith, "the people of Syria got hold of it," is a mistake on the part of some of the narrators, because the raid of the people of Syria on the people of Madinah took place in the time of Yazid bin Muawiya bin Abu Sufyan, whereas Abu Hurairah had already died before that, during the days of Muawiya. The correct version is as given in the first chain mentioned above.
