We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on a military expedition when the people were struck by severe hunger. Some men asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for permission to slaughter some of their riding animals, saying, "Allah will sustain us through them."When Umar bin Khattab saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was about to grant them permission to slaughter some of their mounts, he said, "Messenger of Allah, what will become of us if we meet the enemy tomorrow on foot and hungry? But if you see fit, Messenger of Allah, call for whatever remains of the people's provisions so we may gather it together, then ask Allah to bless it. Allah will surely sustain us through your supplication," or he said, "Allah will bless your supplication for us."So the Prophet ﷺ called for the remnants of their provisions. The people began bringing handfuls of food, and a little more than that. The most anyone brought was a saa of dates. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gathered it all together, then stood and supplicated as long as Allah willed. Then he summoned the army with their containers and ordered them to scoop from it. Not a single container in the army remained unfilled, and the same amount was still left over. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his back teeth showed and said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. No believing servant meets Allah holding firmly to these two testimonies without being shielded from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection."
Imam Ahmad narrated it (15449) from Ali bin Ishaq, who said, Abdullah, meaning Ibn Mubarak, informed us, he said, Uzai informed us, he said, Muttalib bin Hantab Makhzumi narrated to us, he said, Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Amra Ansari narrated to me, he said, my father narrated to me, and he then mentioned it.It is also found in Zuhd of Abdullah bin Mubarak (917). Tabarani narrated it in Kabir (575), and Ibn Hibban (221) and Hakim (2/618-619) graded it sahih, all of them through the route of Uzai. Hakim said, "The isnad is sahih, though the two of them did not narrate it."I say, its isnad is hasan because of Muttalib bin Hantab, who is Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Muttalib bin Hantab bin Harith Makhzumi. There is some minor criticism of him that does no harm, and his hadith is hasan. He has been accused of concealment in transmission, though here he explicitly stated that he heard it directly.Haythami mentioned it in Majma (1/19-20) and said, "Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it in Kabir and Awsat, and its narrators are trustworthy."
