Anas reported that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ married and brought his bride home, my mother, Umm Sulaym, prepared a dish of dates, butter, and curd and put it in a stone bowl. She said, "Anas, take this to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and tell him, 'My mother sent this to you. She greets you with peace and says that this is only a small gift to you from us, Messenger of Allah.'"So I carried it to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "My mother sends you her greetings of peace and says that this is only a small gift to you from us, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Set it down." Then he said, "Go and call so-and-so and so-and-so and so-and-so for me, and anyone else you meet," and he named some men.So I called those he had named and everyone I met along the way.The narrator said, I asked Anas, "How many were they?"Anas replied, "Around three hundred."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Anas, bring the bowl."They came in until the covered porch and the room were full. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Let them sit in circles of ten, and let each person eat from what is nearest to him."They ate until they were satisfied. One group would go out and another would come in, until all of them had eaten. Then he said to me, "Anas, take it away."So I took it away, and I could not tell whether there was more in it when I set it down or when I lifted it up.Some groups of them stayed sitting and talking in the house of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat there and his wife had turned her face to the wall. They became a burden on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he went out and greeted his wives, then came back. When they saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had returned, they realized they had been a burden on him, so they rushed to the door and all went out.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and let down the curtain and went in, while I was still sitting in the room. He had not been inside long before he came out to me, and this verse had been revealed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out and recited it to the people, "O you who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, without waiting for it to be prepared. But when you are invited, then enter, and when you have eaten, disperse, without lingering for conversation. That used to trouble the Prophet" [Ahzab 33:53], to the end of the verse.
Muslim narrated it in the Book of Marriage (94:1428), from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Jafar bin Sulayman narrated to us, from Jaad Abu Uthman, from Anas, and he mentioned the hadith at length, including the story of the hijab.Bukhari mentioned it in the Book of Marriage (5163) as a mu'allaq narration, saying, Ibrahim said, from Abu Uthman - whose name was Jaad - from Anas bin Malik, who said, "He passed by us in the masjid of Banu Rifa, and I heard him say, 'Whenever the Prophet ﷺ passed by the dwellings of Umm Salim, he would go in to her and greet her with salam.'" Then he said, "When the Prophet ﷺ was a bridegroom with Zaynab, Umm Salim said to me, 'If only we gave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a gift.' I said to her, 'Do so.' So she took some dates, ghee, and dried curd, and made a hais dish in a cooking pot, and sent it with me to him..." the rest of the hadith in similar wording.
