The people of the Suffah were poor folk. The Prophet ﷺ once said, "Whoever has food for two, let him take a third with him. Whoever has food for four, let him take a fifth or sixth with him," or as he said.Abu Bakr brought three, and the Prophet ﷺ took ten with him. Abu Bakr along with three, meaning myself, my father, and my mother (and I do not know whether he also said my wife and our servant who moved between our house and Abu Bakr's house).Abu Bakr ate his evening meal at the Prophet's ﷺ home, then stayed until he had prayed the Isha prayer. Then he returned and stayed until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished his meal. He came back after as much of the night had passed as Allah willed. His wife asked him, "What kept you from your guests?"He replied, "Have you not given them their evening meal?"She said, "They refused to eat until you came. They were offered food but declined."So I went and hid myself.Abu Bakr said, "You stupid fool!" He cursed and reviled, then said, "Eat!" And he said, "I will never eat it!"By Allah, we did not take a morsel except that more rose up from beneath it, until they were full, and the food became more than it had been before. Abu Bakr looked at it, and behold, it was as much as before or more.He said to his wife, "Sister of Banu Firas!"She replied, "No, by the coolness of my eyes, it is now three times more than it was before."So Abu Bakr ate from it and said, "That was only Satan," meaning his oath. Then he ate a morsel from it, then carried it to the Prophet ﷺ, where it remained until morning. There was a treaty between us and a people, and when the term expired, we divided into twelve men, with each man having a group of people with him, Allah knows how many were with each man. He sent some of the food with them, and they all ate from it, or as he said.
Bukhari narrated it in the Signs of Prophethood (3581) and Muslim in the Book of Drinks (2057), both from the hadith of Mutamir bin Sulayman, from his father, who said, Abu Uthman narrated to us, that Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Bakr narrated to him, and he mentioned it.
